The Federal Aviation Administration postponed their announcement of air traffic control closures until Friday, March 22.

The delay comes after more than 20 senators co-sponsored an amendment called Save Contract Towers, which could come up for consideration as soon as March 18th.

The amendment sought to stop the FAA cuts citing concerns for public safety and impaired access to rural areas.

The FAA said the plan to cut contracted control towers would save $45-50 million. The amendment would cover that cost.

Eight towers in Washington are included on the list of almost 200 that the FAA may cut, including Olympia Regional Airport, Tacoma Narrows, Renton Municipal, and Snohomish County Airport (Paine Field) in Everett.

Under the sequestration, the FAA faces more than $600 million in cuts.
