Young athletes who compete in elite sports are more likely to show signs of burnout.

A British study of boys playing professional club soccer found one in four had experienced symptoms of burnout. This was especially true of players who said they felt pressure to be perfect by their coaches, parents and other team members.

Dr Andrew Hill, lecturer in sports and exercise science in the University of Leeds' School of Biomedical Sciences, said some young athletes showed signs of chronic stress, exhaustion, and disillusion with their sport at a young age.

The most common symptoms of burnout were physical and emotional exhaustion, but experts say perfectionism can lead to low self esteem as well as psychological and interpersonal problems.

The results of the study were published in the journal Science Daily.
