With this weekend's New York City marathon canceled due to the damage from Monday's Superstorm Sandy, many marathoners are choosing to volunteer to help aid organizations with disaster relief efforts.

World Vision says 16 marathoners from Team World Vision assembled hundreds of emergency food kits for Sandy survivors in the Bronx. The 300 food kits each contain enough food to feed a family of 5 for a day.

We had a guy that traveled all the way from Australia and he knew that he was displaced a little bit ... it took a whole day-and-a-half to get here... but he said if he was just to sit in a hotel room or go sightseeing he would feel empty. And so by being able to come down here and do a little bit of something, give back a little part, it really made him happy, said Reed Slattery with World Vision.

On Sunday, the marathoners were going to help distribute the kits, along with blankets and water.

There's obviously disappointment, but it turned into joy and excitement now that they were actually going to give back and help out, said Slattery.
