NEAR ELMER CITY, Wash.-- About 150 firefighters continue to battle a wildfire spreading north of Grand Coulee Dam.

The Buffalo Lake Road Fire has burned 12 square miles-- more than 8,000 acres. The fire jumped Highway 155 overnight and threatened some homes between Coulee Dam and Elmer City for a while.

Residents were put on alert that they may need to evacuate at some point.

No homes have burned, but a barn may have been lost, according to Colville Tribe spokeswoman Cathy Moses.

Thick smoke and ash is causing several people to wear masks for protection.

All day long, inhaling that smoke -- that s why we are wearing masks now. Our noses were running, Ed Haven of Coulee Dam said.

The fire isten percent contained. Fire officials expect it won't be fully contained until Aug. 20. Until then, they say winds are a concern.

Fire crews from Elmer City, Douglas County, Grand Coulee and the Colville Tribal Fire Department are working the fire. The Washington Department of Natural Resources is also assisting.
