Verizon Wireless submitted to the frantic masses on Friday, and will no longer plan to charge customers for any online or telephone bill payments.

All in the span of 24 hours, Verizon first proposed a $2 convenience fee for one-time payments over the phone or web, the Federal Communications Commission then countered with plans to investigate that fee, and finally Verizon dropped it all together.

At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers, said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless through a statement. Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time.

The fee was scheduled to be implemented January 15.

It unleashed a backlash from customers, frustrated by another potential ding to their bank accounts.

Already this year, similar fees and charges have been thwarted by outspoken customers unafraid to take their money elsewhere. Bank of America's monthly $5 debit card fee died quickly, as well as Netflix's plan to split into two separate entities for streaming and rentals.

The company made the decision in response to customer feedback about the plan, which was designed to improve the efficiency of those transactions, Verizon officials said in a statement.
