VANCOUVER -- An alert lifeguard is getting credit for saving the life of a 5-year-old boy who almost drowned in a Vancouver swimming pool Friday night.
Lifeguard Carter Coval said he was scanning the pool at about 8:15 p.m. inside the Lakeshore Athletic Club when he saw the boy face-down.
He was foaming from the mouth and nose, Coval said. His lips were blue and his eyes were in the back of his head. He was unconscious.
Coval asked another swimmer to call 911, and then he started performing CPR.
After about five breathes he started to breathe on his own and he got a very steady heart rate, Coval said.
Within a couple of minutes the child regained consciousness, right before paramedics arrived.
