Target is denying a report that the hackers who accessed up to 40 million credit and debit cards during the holiday shopping season also were able to steal encrypted personal identification numbers (PINs).

Reuters reported
the news Wednesday, citing a senior payments executive familiar with the situation.

A Target spokesperson said no encrypted PIN data was accessed and there was no evidence PIN data had been compromised.

The breach that exposed the credit card and debit card information of as many as 40 million Target customers who swiped their cards between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 is still under investigation. It's unclear how the breach occurred.
