Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe vision loss in American 60 and older.

Once it progresses there aren't many treatment options, but doctors are using one high-tech option to help patients see better.

Doctors remove the patients' natural lenses and replace them with miniature telescopes that help magnify images.

The telescope only goes in one eye.

Now, these folks are bi-ocular. One eye for one thing, one eye for the other, optometrist Susan A. Primo said.

It takes about 12 weeks for patients to master the new device.

In one study, nine out of 10 patients improved vision by at least two lines on the eye chart.

The most common risks include inflammation and increased pressure in the eye.
