SEATTLE - Friday afternoon federal wildlife officials shot and killed a sick coyote wandering around Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Visitors to Volunteer Park told officials the male coyote was approaching people and dogs. The animal was not acting normally and appeared ill, old and mangy.

Because of the proximity to people and parks, and the fact that the coyote wasn't acting normally, federal wildlife decided to remove the coyote for safety reasons.

There are about 50,000 coyotes in Washington state, many of them living in urban areas.
