A King County registered nurse has surrendered his license after he authorized medical marijuana to two young children, ages six and four.
According to the Washington Department of Health, Joel Berman authorized the medical marijuana to treat the two young children for a wasting condition or debilitating disease, even though he had not given either child a complete physical exam, didn t review their medical histories and didn t document measures other than marijuana used to treat them. He also failed to fully record and adequately document his examination of the two children for any terminal or debilitating medical conditions.
State health officials say a wasting syndrome is also not a valid independent pediatric diagnosis without the presence of another illness.
Berman voluntarily gave up his credentials as a registered nurse and advanced registered nurse practitioner, effective October 11.
