The Basics

  • SeaTac averages about 100,000 passengers a day from June through August, compared to about 85,000 off-season.
  • Passengers should plan to arrive two hours before their flight during that time.
  • Be aware to not bring prohibited items through checkpoints. Anytime one makes there, screening has to be halted.

SEATAC, Wash. -- Sea-Tac Airport reports passengers are moving a little more smoothly through security lines Thursday, but the airport is just busier in the summer.

A spokeswoman, Christina Faine, says travelers should arrive at the airport two hours before their flight.

SeaTac averages about 100,000 passengers a day from June through August, compared to about 85,000 off-season.

Regional Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Lorie Dankers also says the summer travel season is increasing numbers at security checkpoints and the agency adjusts its staffing. She says wait times Thursday morning were around nine minutes.

We came in about an hour ago and saw the lines were even longer than they are now, so we went down and had some supper, passenger Robert Coleman said. He was trying to catch a flight to Boston Wednesday night. It's a lot of people. This is a busy airport.

Since Sunday, Alaska said it has rescheduled more than 150 passengers who missed their flights because of long TSA security lines at Sea-Tac Airport.

A spokesperson for TSA said the delays are not due to sequester furloughs or budgets cuts. Instead they say that the busy summer travel season is to blame.

The TSAasks passengers to be aware of the content of their carry-on items prior to coming to the security checkpoint. Any time a prohibited items makes it to the checkpoiint, screening has to be halted to resolve that issue.
