The Washington State Department of Transportation has released charts showing the busiest times to travel on MemorialDay.

The attached gallery has WSDOT charts of what drivers can expect in four main trouble areas:

  • Interstate 90 between North Bend and Cle Elum
  • US 2 between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass
  • Interstate 5 between Tacoma and Olympia
  • Interstate 5 between Bellingham and the Canada border

If you don't see a highway listed on a certain day, that means WSDOT does not expect significant backups.

Traditionally, Monday afternoon is the worst, especially over westbound over Snoqualmie Pass. That commute has been known to last for several hours, so drivers are advised to cross very early or very late Monday.

Other hot spots are the ferry terminals. If you want to make sure you get where you want to go, make an advanced reservation. Some ferry runs are nearly booked even before the weekend begins. You're also encouraged to travel during off-peak times.

Most public transit systems will be on a holiday schedule.
