The head of Seattle s largest Catholic Church told parishioners Sunday they should pray the upcoming papal conclave will choose the one who will lead us to new places.

Catholic Cardinals are meeting at The Vatican this week to select a new Pope, after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

Father Michael Ryan, widely regarded as a progressive leader of St. James Cathedral, said the church cannot live in the past.

Our challenge is to dig deep into our rich and wonderful tradition and make it live in this time, Fr. Ryan said.

Fr. Ryan s calls for modernization come after expressing concern over the choice of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to the papacy in 2005. The pastor, like many of his parishioners, hopes the new leader of the Catholic Church is less conservative.

I think the church needs a voice for the poor, a voice for women and a voice for gay people, said parishioner Max Lewis.
