The first surprise for The Washington State Fish and Wildlife Officers was a phone call from a man confessing to poaching three deer back in the late 1960s.

The second was when they opened a letter from the man containing a check for $6,000.

An officer told the anonymous caller the statute of limitations had long expired but did tell the caller what the fines would have been back then. The check was for more than the fines.

In the letter, the man said, the check was for three illegally killed white tail deer I took between the years 1967 through 1970 in Washington State.

He added, My conscious has not allowed me to put this sin to rest, until now. I know that GOD has forgiven me and hope that WDFW will as well.
