The King County Sheriff s Office is reminding people NOT to fire guns in the air to celebrate the new year.
Any bullet fired from a gun must land somewhere and the risks of causing an injury or death is significant, said King County Sheriff John Urquhart
Every year around the country, people are injured and killed by celebratory gunfire and law enforcement officials want to keep that from happening in King County.
The Sheriff s Office said if they can pinpoint someone shooting they will fully enforce the law. At a minimum a person can be charged with reckless endangerment and if convicted the shooter can end up in jail for up to 364 days and be fined up to $5,000.
The ATF says if the person who fires the gun is prohibited from possessing a firearm, it is also a federal violation. The maximum sentence for the federal crime is 10 years in prison.
The ATF is urging people to contact local law enforcement if you observe anyone shooting a gun into the air, or to call ATF at 1 800 ATF GUNS (1 800 283 4867) if you know of someone who possesses a firearm illegally.
