TACOMA, Wash. -- A traffic stop in Tacoma Thursday morning allowed police to recover numerous U.S. Postal Service packages they believe were stolen from front porches.

Tacoma Police pulled over the pickup at 3:48 a.m. after an alert neighbor noticed a group of people acting strangely. A search revealed dozens of letters and a few packages destined for homes in Northeast Tacoma.

Postal workers are trying to get all the items back to their rightful owners before Christmas and hopes the incident serves as a reminder to not leave mail in your mailboxes overnight.

Police believe their could be as many as 30 victims. The suspects could face federal charges of five years for the mail theft.

Correction: The packages involved were stolen from the U.S. Postal Service. An earlier version of this article identified a different carrier as the source.
