With just five weeks before votes are counted, a new KING 5 poll shows that Democrat Jay Inslee continues to lead the race for governor over Republican Rob McKenna, now with a six-point advantage.

In a statewide poll of likely voters conducted for KING 5 News, Inslee's support stands at 48 percent, compared to 42 percent for McKenna.

Earlier this year, McKenna had a strong lead in the race. But by August, Inslee pulled ahead. After winning the August primary, our KING 5 poll found Inslee ahead by 5 points in September -- at lead that continues into October.

In our poll, voters said they favor Inslee on social issues and the environment, while they favor McKenna on handling the state economy. Respondents also see McKenna as the candidate who would bring more change to Olympia.

Overall however, respondents said they see Inslee as the more likeable candidate by a 14-point margin.

Both candidates are hitting the airwaves hard with commercials and have three televised debates scheduled in the next few weeks.

The KING 5 poll was conducted by SurveyUSA. A total of 540 likely voters were reached statewide on landlines and cell phones; the gubernatorial head-to-head question had a margin of error of 4.3 percent.
