TACOMA, Wash.- Skyline of Sammamish won its third straight state championship with a 45-21 victory over Ferris on Saturday night in the Washington Class 4A state title game.
Brigham Young-bound quarterback Jake Heaps threw four touchdown passes as the Spartans (12-2) won their fifth state title this decade. Receiver Kasen Williams had eight catches for 89 yards and three for touchdowns as the Spartans dispatched the Saxsons (10-4) from Spokane.
Heaps completed 15-of-25 passes for 254 yards and no interceptions and finished his career with a 40-2 record, including a 15-0 postseason run. The Spartans beat Issaquah 20-15 in the title game last year and won the 3A crown in 2007.
Quarterback Connor Halliday competed 26-of-44 passes for 254 yards, two interceptions and three touchdowns for Ferris. The Saxons have never won a state title.
Heaps fired a 26-yard scoring pass to Williams in the third quarter to make it 31-14 and threw a 15-yard strike to Connor Brandt in the fourth quarter for his 45th touchdown pass of the season. Heaps scored on a 1-yard run late in the game.
Heaps threw two touchdown passes to Williams to help give Skyline a 24-14 halftime lead. Heaps completed 10-of-14 passes for 116 yards in the first half.
Nick Washburn scored on a 5-yard run to give Skyline a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter before Heaps connected with Williams for a score.
Halliday answered with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jason Bates.
Halliday, who has committed to play next year at Washington State, opened the scoring with a 3-yard pass to Mason Maxey in the first quarter. Ferris punter Gage Orosco helped set up the touchdown with a 22-yard run on a fake punt.
Heaps responded with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Williams late in the first quarter to tie it at 7-7.
Skyline's Nick Beauchamp had 115 yards on 18 carries.
Halliday threw 41 touchdown passes this season.
Skyline beat Ferris 24-21 in the semifinals last year.
