BELLEVUE, Wash. -- A Washington state trooper and two DUI suspects were hospitalized after a chain reaction crash on Interstate 405 near State Route 520 Thursday night.

Washington State Patrol spokesperson Julie Startup said a trooper, identified as Michael Porter, 28, had pulled over a suspected drunk driver in a BMW on I-405 at SR 520 just before midnight.

The trooper and the driver were standing outside their vehicles as the trooper was reading his rights, when a woman driving a green Acura slammed into the back of the trooper's patrol car, which then hit the back of the BMW, which hit the two men.

The first driver, a 32-year-old man from Bellingham, ended up trapped under the BMW and the trooper was thrown into the nearby barrier.

A 26-year-old Shoreline woman caused the chain reaction crash, said Startup. We're very fortunate this morning not to have lost one of our troopers.

The suspectedDUIdriver, the trooper and the woman suffered injuries and all three were taken to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. The first driver suffered only minor injuries. The trooper had more serious injuries, mostly to his leg. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

The woman driving the car was the most seriously hurt. Once she is treated and released from the hospital, she'll face charges of DUIand vehicular assault.
