Firefighters in Skagit County on Sunday battled a fire in a former seed company warehouse in Mount Vernon.

Burlington fire officials said about 50 firefighters were on scene of the fire at the Alf Christianson Seed Co. warehouse on S. 3rd St.

They took a defensive stance in fighting the fire, which may have started on the second floor or the roof area.

In the crowd of people taking pictures, Aggie Juarez and his sons watched as firefighters tried to save the building where he says his dad worked in the 70's and 80's.

Me and my brother actually worked for the company for awhile in the summertime, he said.

The company moved out of the warehouse a couple of years ago. The building was empty, or at least it was suppose to be.

It's been pretty well known that transients have been living in here, said Steve Riggs of the Mount Vernon Fire Dept.

When firefighters arrived they found flames and smoke shooting from the windows and a man on top of the roof trying to escape.

If there is any reason to believe, you know, that individual or any other individuals is a part of this than PD takes over the criminal side of it, said Riggs.

Rail traffic was suspended because lines were being run across the tracks.

The 100,000 square foot building is being considered for the new Skagit County Jail.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police and fire officials through the non-emergency dispatch line at 360-428-3211.
