The family of a 12-year old boy who drowned in the Stillaguamish River recently is trying to make sure other parents don t go through the same heartache.

They say Elijah Spratt wasn t wearing his life jacket on June 30 when he disappeared beneath the water. They don t want that to happen again, so at a backyard memorial service Sunday, they called on friends to bring life jackets to donate to other families.

Through social media and word of mouth, nearly 500 life jackets have been collected and will now be distributed one way or another to families in the area .

Every year we have to suffer through someone losing their life there, said Amy Jacobson, who was at the river that day.

She didn t know the family at all, but felt compelled to help and organized a Facebook group that helped collect the life jackets.

I just couldn t imagine that being my little boy, said Jacobson. I just don t want any other parent to go through this.
