Mothers at one Zimbabwe hospital are charged $5 every time they scream during childbirth, according to a new report by Transparency International.

The Washington Post, which discovered the report, also said the average annual income in Zimbabwe is $150. Zimbabwe hospitals already charge a $50 delivery fee, so a woman in labor at the $5 hospital who screams 20 times would end up losing her entire savings for the year.

What if they can t pay? Transparency International says women who can t afford it can be detained at the hospital and charged interest until the family pays.

Naturally, the high cost forces many mothers to stay home to give birth. The United Nations reports that an average of eight mothers die during childbirth every day in Zimbabwe.
