This is the sixth Super Bowl rematch in NFL history:

  • Miami Dolphins vs. Washington Redskins: Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl XVII
  • Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X, Super Bowl XII and again in Super Bowl XXX.
  • San Francisco 49ers vs. Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XXIII
  • Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVII and Super Bowl XXVIII
  • New England Patriots vs. New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI

If the Patriots win, Tom Brady will join Pittsburgh’sTerry Bradshaw and San Francisco’s Joe Montana as the only starting quarterbacks to win four Super Bowls. Also, Bill Belichick will join Pittsburgh’s Chuck Noll as the only four-time Super Bowl-winning head coaches.

If the Patriots lose, they would join the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings as the only franchises to lose four Super Bowls.

Former UW quarterback Isiah Stanback is a wide receiver on the New England Patriots' practice squad. Other than that, there are no Huskies or Cougars on either the Patriots or Giants rosters.

No team has ever played in their home stadium in a Super Bowl. This year’s game is at Lucas Oil Field (Indianapolis Colts). Future Super Bowl sites include:

  • XLVII: Mercedes-Benz Superdome (New Orleans Saints)
  • XLVIII: MetLife Stadium (New York Giants and New York Jets)
  • XLIX: University of Phoenix Stadium (Arizona Cardinals)

No NFL team has ever won three straight Super Bowls, but before the Super Bowl era, the Green Bay Packers won three straight NFL championships between 1965 and 1967. They are the only team to win back-to-back-to-back championships.

Three cities have been home to more than one Super Bowl participant

  • New York: Jets in Super Bowl III; Giants in Super Bowls XXI, XXV, XXXV, XLII and XLVI
  • Baltimore: Colts in Super Bowls III and V; Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV
  • Los Angeles: Rams in Super Bowl XIV; Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII

The average cost of a 30 second Super Bowl ad this year will be $3.5 million.

This will be the first Super Bowl streamed online (legally, anyway).

Players on the winning team will get $88,000 each. Losing players get half that.

The game will be broadcast in more than 185 countries and 30 different langauges.

The Vince Lombardi trophy, named after the legendary Green Bay Packers coach, is sterling silver, weighs 6.7 pounds and is valued at over $25,000.
