12:37 PM PST on Tuesday, December 2, 2008

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Sounders FC will get a national audience for the first game in franchise history.

The Sounders will open the 2009 Major League Soccer season hosting the New York Red Bulls on March 19, the team announced Tuesday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

The complete schedule will be announced in February.

Seattle will become the 15th team in the MLS. New York reached the MLS Cup this season, losing to Columbus in the final.

Sounders majority owner Joe Roth says the selection by the league to play the first game of the season in Seattle presents an opportunity to show the city's excitement for the expansion team to a national audience.
