Seattle schools say girls tennis coach wasn't fired

SEATTLE – Seattle Public Schools says the girls tennis coach at Ballard High School, who was profiled in a weekly newspaper, was not fired as earlier reported.

Seattle Schools spokesperson Patti Spencer says Aaron Silverburg's contract had expired and it was not renewed for the upcoming season.

The dismissal comes just a couple of weeks after an article in "Seattle Weekly", which highlighted Silverburg's flute playing and reading od sensual poems to his athletes.  The former tennis pro called himself a "Buddhist tennis coach."

Silverburg said he was surprised by the dismissal and says the only reason given was that something was "inappropriate."

Spencer says there were no direct complaints about the readings that the district is aware of, and that the principal did talk to team members and parents after the article came out.  Spencer said that if the types of statements quoted in the Seattle Weekly are correct, it would, at minimum, show poor judgment.
