Lenny Wilkens to be inducted in WA Sports Hall of Fame

07:21 AM PST on Thursday, January 8, 2009

Seattle SuperSonics vice chairman Lenny Wilkens talks to reporters in this Nov. 30, 2006 file photo in Seattle. Less than a day after they fired their coach and general manager, the Sonics almost have as many candidates as they've had wins recently.

TACOMA, Wash. - The Washington Sports Hall of Fame says former Seattle SuperSonics coach Lenny Wilkens will become its newest inductee.

The 71-year-old Wilkens will be honored at halftime of Saturday's game between Washington and California at the Huskies' campus Bank of America Arena.

Wilkens already is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. He spent four seasons with the Sonics as a player and another 11 seasons as a coach, coaching them to their only NBA title in the 1978-79 NBA season.

Wilkens is the league's all-time leader in coaching victories with 1,332 wins. He has not coached since the 2004-05 season.
