LONDON (AP) — John Terry says he will not be appealing the four-match ban and fine imposed by the Football Association for racially abusing an opponent in a Premier League game.

The Chelsea defender says he is sorry for hurling the racial slur at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during the west London derby last October.

In a statement released Thursday through his management company, the 31-year-old Terry says "I accept that the language I used, regardless of the context, is not acceptable on the football field or indeed in any walk of life."

Terry was cleared in a criminal trial in July of a racially aggravated public order offense, but was suspended and given a record 220,000 pound ($356,000) fine by the FA.
