HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A planned soccer match between Liberia and Jamaica in Connecticut has been cancelled after the promoter acknowledged the teams never agreed to play.

Tickets for the international friendly game, scheduled for July 28 at Rentschler Field, went on sale July 9.

But the United States Soccer Federation says it never received an application for the match.

Samuel Sampson, a spokesman for promoter Ricky Swen, said financial negotiations with Liberia fell through. He says Swen is working to replace Liberia with Kenya for a match that would be held in August.

USSF spokesman Neil Beuthe says the promoter could face a $1,000 fine for selling tickets.

Paul Marte, a spokesman for Bushnell Management, which runs the stadium, says those who bought tickets, will get refunds.
