PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Portland Timbers, who will join Major League Soccer next season, will play an exhibition game against Manchester City of the English Premier League on July 17.

The game, part of Manchester City's preseason U.S. tour, will be played at Merlo Field at the University of Portland. The Timbers are part of the United Soccer Leagues but will jump to the MLS for the 2011 season.

The game is one of several friendlies involving English Premier League teams on North American soil set for this summer.

The MLS New York Red Bulls will host Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the New York Football Challenge July 22-25 at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon was tentatively scheduled as the fourth team in the tournament.

Tottenham of England will also play a preseason exhibition at the MLS San Jose Earthquakes on June 17.

The Bolton Wanderers will visit the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium, also on July 17.

The Timbers also announced they will host the South American side Club Atletico Boca Juniors of Argentina in another exhibition at PGE Park on May 29.

PGE Park, the Timbers' home field, is unavailable for the Manchester City match because of a conflict with the Triple-A Portland Beavers baseball team.
