PORTLAND – PGE Park is now a full-time construction zone after the official groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday morning, to kick off the transformation into a new, world-class soccer stadium.
Speakers at the ceremony brimmed with optimism and said they expect the stadium to be finished in just six months.
Team owner Merritt Paulson turned the shovel with city officials and the commissioner of major league soccer.
They said the team and stadium have been ahead of schedule in their preparations for opening day early next year.
With all the wrangling and controversy over the stadium deal now behind them, Paulson said he’s looking forward to the future of soccer in Portland. “Our job is to get people in the gates,” he said.
The stadium’s transformation will include a new club lounge, a seating bowl around the field, an expanded public entrance plaza and two huge video scoreboards.
