Sonics fans rallied in Seattle Monday night to send a message about the return of the NBA to Seattle. It comes two days before league owners are scheduled to finally vote on the proposed move of the Kings franchise to Seattle.
Sonics faithful gathered at two rallies - one at Seattle's FX McRory's in Pioneer Square and at Neumo's on Capitol Hill - to show their green and gold. Mayor Mike McGinn was among the many fans who posed for a group photo to send to NBA owners.
Organizers hope the rallies send a message to the league about Chris Hansen’s proposal to buy the NBA franchise for $625 million.
"How many guys have come into this city and fought for us the way Chris Hansen is fighting for us," said Dave "Softy" Mahler, KJR Radio host and one of the rally organizers. "This thing may not happen down the road. It may end up Chris without the NBA coming back in November. But the way thing guy continues to fight and scratch and claw for basketball fans and sports fans here, I think he's a hero no matter what happens in this story."
NBA owners are expected to meet in Dallas on Wednesday to vote once and for all on Hansen's proposal to purchase the Kings and move them to Seattle for $625 million.
There are people like Sacramento Bee columnist Marcose Breton who believe the NBA will reject Hansen for specific reasons.
“I think the NBA doesn’t want to feel like it’s being bludgeoned by the Seattle group and they’ll stick to their guns,” said Breton. “Why should any small market feel confident or comfortable with the NBA if there’s a billionaire in some other city willing to pay a higher price in the league and rip the team out for no good reason.”
Even with all the optimism in Seattle about an NBA return, there is still some pessimism from Sonics fans.
“I don’t trust the NBA at this point, but I’m hoping for the best,” said Ryan Johannes, fan.
