The Seattle Seahawks may release veteran defensive end Red Bryant in order to sign free agent defensive end Michael Bennett, NFL.com and Fox Sports 1 reported Sunday.
The Seahawks cut wide receiver Sidney Rice last week. NFL.com says the cuts could allow Seattle to also re-sign free agent receiver Golden Tate.
Bryant’s contract would reportedly be an $8.5 million cap hit for the Seahawks, but cutting him would free up about $5.5 million of that.
The Seahawks need to look to their salary future now if they want to hold onto quarterback Russell Wilson, cornerback Richard Sherman and safety Earl Thomas. While they are not free agents now, they will command larger deals when their contracts are up.
