LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — A former Seattle Seahawk is accused of starting a fire in his apartment outside Spokane Valley.
Kevin Ellison, 25, told investigators the fire sparked while he was smoking in his bed Thursday. However, the Associated Press reports he later said he set his bed on fire with a cigar because God told him to do it.
Ellison was arrested for investigation of arson.
Ellison currently plays for the Spokane Shock Arena Football team, but has been suspended due to the investigation. He was drafted out of USC by the San Diego Chargers, and played in four games with the Seattle Seahawks in 2010.
Ellison had to jump from a third story window to escape the flames when the fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. He was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation where detectives questioned him further.
Three units in the apartment building were heavily damaged in the fire.
