An Eastern Washington University athlete tried to qualify for the Venezuelan Olympic Team Saturday on Alki Beach in West Seattle, surrounded by pirates.

It was an unusual location and unusual circumstances for pole vaulter Keisa Monterola, who was trying to qualify for London under the Olympic “B” Standard of 4.40 meters. She missed all three of her attempts.

Monterola was among dozens of pole vaulters of at the 2012 Alki Swashbuckler Beach Vault, which was happening the same time as the Seafair Pirates landing on the beach. The Pirates arrival, with their cannons going off, added a degree of distraction for the competitors.

Monterola was attempting to qualify while still dealing with the death of her brother, who was reportedly killed in a robbery near their hometown of Caracas, Venezuela last month.
