Megan Rapinoe, midfielder for the Seattle Sounders FC Women and Team USA, revealed Monday that she is gay.

“For the record: I am gay,” Rapinoe told Out Magazine.

Rapinoe says she has never hidden her sexuality, it’s just that nobody has ever directly asked her whether she was gay.

“I feel like sports in general are still homophobic, in the sense that not a lot of people are out,” said Rapinoe. “I feel everyone is really craving [for] people to come out. People want -- they need -- to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good ol’ U.S. of A.”

Rapinoe says she has been dating an Austrialian soccer player for three years.

She goes on to say that she feels like being gay is more accepted in women’s sports than men’s sports.

"It’s sad,” she says.

Rapinoe won an NCAA championship at the University of Portland.
