Seattle Seahawks left tackle George Fant is expected to undergo surgery on Monday after being injured on Friday night in the 20-13 victory against the Vikings.
Fant went down in the second quarter on Friday when Seahawks center Justin Britt inadvertently fell into him on a pass play. He was carted off the field after having an aircast placed on his right leg.
After the game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Fant tore his ACL and would likely need surgery to repair the injury. Carroll confirmed the Seahawks’ starting left tackle will have surgery on Monday.
“He’ll do a fantastic job at coming back,” Carroll said following Monday’s practice. “He’ll make it back for next season and all that.”
Carroll also went into detail on the extent of Fant’s injuries, adding that the left tackle suffered MCL damage as well.
“There is a little MCL work in there,” Carroll said. “No cartilage at all which is really a good sign. That makes so surfaces were not damaged at all and so that’ll really help him in terms of long term recovery right now.”
When asked if Luke Joeckel could make the move over to fill Fant’s position, Carroll indicated the team would like to keep Joeckel at left guard. However, he could move over to left tackle if necessary.
“As of now, it gives us a challenge,” Carroll said of filling Fant’s position.” Fortunately for us, and I don’t know if you guys look at it this way, but Luke Joeckel’s with us. And Luke has been a starting left tackle in the NFL. He was drafted as that. And if that’s what winds up happening, that winds up happening and we know that. We like Luke playing at left guard and we’d like to keep it that way and see what how can do at left tackle. We’ll find out how it works, but we know we have a really good plan for that.”
Carroll seemed to be leaning toward Rees Odhiambo as a solid option at left tackle, saying the team “drafted him to be a starter.” Carroll also noted there was a “possibility” second-round pick Ethan Pocic, who played left tackle for one game at LSU, could also get a shot at filling the spot.
The Seahawks acquired Eagles offensive tackle Matt Tobin in a trade following Monday’s practice. Tobin, who has had 5 career starts at left guard, is expected to add to the team’s offensive line in Fant’s absence.
