NEW ORLEANS – Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett will undergo surgery Monday for a knee injury, head coach Pete Carroll confirmed Sunday. Bennett will reportedly miss 2-3 weeks, according to NFL.com’s Connor Orr.
It’s been speculated the injury occurred two weeks ago against the Atlanta Falcons, but Bennett played through it in last Sunday’s overtime tie with Arizona.
Bennett was held out of Sunday’s 25-20 loss to the Saints.
“He could have gone out here and gutted it out but that’s not the right thing to do. So we’ll take care of him as soon as we can,” said Carroll after the game.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports the Seahawks and Bennett have been discussing a new contract for the 31-year-old. Bennett is in the third year of a four-year, $32 million deal with Seattle. He has been vocal the last two years, saying he felt he has outplayed the contact and deserves a new deal.
