Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor reported for the start of training camp with no new deal in place. Chancellor, 29, is in the final year of his contract, and extension talks are apparently still ongoing.
“We have looked long and hard at that,” coach Pete Carroll said Sunday when asked about the status of the negotiations. “There is a lot of real positive stuff coming, we aren’t quite there yet but I think it’s nothing but positive stuff but hopefully we will be able to get stuff done soon.”
Chancellor underwent surgery on both ankles (at the same time!) this offseason to remove nagging bone spurs. He also married his long-time girlfriend, Tiffany Luce, with his fellow Legion of Boom members attending the ceremony. Now ready for football Chancellor is counting on the Seahawks organization to make the right decision. He echoed Carroll’s sentiments during his own press conference on Monday.
“I think it’s been positive on both ends,” Chancellor told reporters. “Hopefully it gets done any time now. But I feel that it’s positive on both ends. Both sides have been very productive – working together. So I’m just waiting to see what’s happening.”
And while he waits, Chancellor will continue to play football. There will be no hold out this season.
“If it’s not done I’ll just play ball,” Chancellor explained. “I play ball regardless. Right now, that’s all I’m focusing on.”
Chancellor has spent his entire career in a Seahawks uniform since he was drafted in the fifth round out of Virginia Tech in 2010. He was recently named by NFL Network as the 34th-best player in the NFL and is arguably one of the top leaders Seattle’s locker room. This is where he wants to stay.
“I do, I do,” Chancellor said. “I love this team. They gave me the first opportunity and the only opportunity and I would love to retire here.”
