Center Justin Britt and Seahawks agree to contract extension

The Seattle Seahawk managed to lock up one more core offensive player on Thursday, signing center Justin Britt to a three-year contract extension.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first tweeted the news of the contract talks Thursday morning, which was later confirmed by coach Pete Carroll during his press conference following the team’s walkthrough.

“I think it’s a recognition and acknowledgment of the player and teammate he has become for us,” Carroll said. “And also the fact that we are able to do it in the offensive line, I think it is important to note. I don’t want to try and persuade you from thinking that. It is a statement and we want to make sure and take care of these guys. Justin has done everything we needed him too.  He has been a great teammate and if this comes to pass, I am thrilled we are able to reward him.

“He is very much in line with all of the things we have done in the past and it just happens to go right through that spot and right in the center of it all.  I’m fired up about that.”

According to Rapoport, the deal is worth $27 million, with $13.25 million for the first year and $15 million in guarantees.

Britt, 26, was originally selected by Seattle in the second round of the 2014 draft out of Missouri. He has firmly cemented himself as the Seahawks’ starting center after shifts at both guard and tackle.

“He has been a fantastic leader for us up there,” Carroll explained. “He had an excellent season and played three spots and started at tackle, guard and center now. We really think he is in the best spot for him.”

In a tweet posted Thursday afternoon, Britt thanked members of the Seahawks organization as well as his teammates and fans for their support. The photo showed Britt signing his paperwork, making the extension official.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Seattle now has Britt locked up through the 2020 season.
