DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Daytona 500 is now scheduled to be run on Monday for the first time in the 54-year-old history of the Great American Race. Then again, it could be Tuesday before the green flag is waved.

The season-opening Sprint Cup race was postponed today due to persistent rain, and Monday's forecast calls for even more rain. NASCAR officials spent more than four hours waiting for a window to dry the famed track, and the race was finally pushed back a day when another storm cell passed over the speedway around 5 p.m. Officials are prepared to wait all day and into the night Monday to avoid a Tuesday race.
