SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners today designated 33-year-old Jose Vidro for assignment and recalled outfielder Wladimir Balentien from Triple-A Tacoma to take Vidro's place on their roster.

The Mariners have 10 days to trade, release, option or assign Vidro outright to the minors.

With the 43 and 69 Mariners this season, Vidro was hitting .234 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs in 85 games. He was acquired in a trade with the Washington Nationals in December 2006 and hit .285 with 13 homers and 104 RBIs in two seasons and 232 games with the Mariners.

He was the Mariners' starting designated hitter in 69 games and seven games as their starting first baseman this season.

The 24-year-old Balentien will be joining the Mariners for the second time this season. He hit .196 with four home runs in 32 games from April 30-June 16. At Tacoma, Balentien hit .266 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs in 61 games this season.
