TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- Forty-two years after winning their last state title, the Curtis Vikings were back on top Saturday night.

Curtis jumped out to a big lead and held off previously-unbeaten Jackson down the stretch for a 60-56 win in the championship game of the 4A state boys basketball tournament at the nearby Tacoma Dome. It marked the first state title for the Vikings (27-2) since 1971, when they won the 3A tournament.

Playing less than 10 miles from campus, Curtis got another big performance from tournament MVP Dominic Robinson, who had a game-high 20 points.

Dan Kingma had 18 points for Jackson, while teammate Brian Zehr added 15. The Timberwolves (26-1) were trying to complete an undefeated season.

Robinson almost single-handedly got Curtis through the first quarter, scoring 11 of the Vikings' 13 points while going on a personal 9-0 run on the way to a 13-11 lead. His teammates started to get involved early in the second quarter, when an 8-0 run opened up a 10-point lead for the Vikings.

Things got worse for Jackson 3 minutes into the second half, when star Jason Todd limped off the court with a leg injury. But after getting re-taped, Todd was back on the floor less than two minutes later.

Todd helped ignite a comeback as the Timberwolves (26-1) cut the deficit down to 46-45 with 3:07 remaining. After Curtis opened up another six-point lead with just over a minute to go, Kingma went on a scoring binge, with 10 points in a span of less than 90 seconds before fouling out with 9.1 seconds left and the Timberwolves trailing 57-56.

Dominique Jordan hit a pair of free throws on the other end for Curtis before teammate Andre Lewis poked the ball away from Todd at the other end to clinch the win.

Senior Isom Brown had 16 points for Curtis.

Todd finished with 10 for the Timberwolves, who have now lost in the 4A state championship game twice in four years. Jackson lost to Kentwood in 2010, when Kingma's older brother Brett was the Timberwolves' star.
