Beach holds off Prep rally to claim Class 3A title

TACOMA, Wash. -- Marquis Davis scored 30 points, including five 3-pointers, to help lead Rainier Beach past Seattle Prep 61-58 for its sixth Class 3A boys state basketball championship on Saturday night.

Davis had 16 points and four 3's in the first half for second-ranked Rainier Beach (27-3) against its Metro League rival. D.J. Fenner scored 26 and Mitch Brewe added 19 points and 14 rebounds for Seattle Prep (25-5).

Davis, who hit 11 of 22 shots, including 5 of 9 on 3's. Davis scored nine in the first quarter and seven in each of the next three quarters to hold off the Panthers.

Rainier Beach led by 14 late in the third quarter before the Panthers rallied in the fourth but could never catch up. Brewe scored 11 in the final quarter, including a basket at the buzzer.

The Vikings won three of four games this season against Seattle Prep. They last won a state title in 2008.
