SNOHOMISH, Wash. - By most accounts, Ike Ditzenberger is different.

The 17-year-old junior at Snohomish High School has Down Syndrome. He takes special classes during the day, but after school Ike is just like one of the guys.

He's a varsity football player.

"He gives it 100 percent every time he's out there," says Head Coach Mark Perry. "On the sidelines, he likes to crack jokes, and sometimes he'll eat a cookie or two."

The players embrace Ike as one of their own. Every night at practice, the team runs a special play. They call it the 'Ike Special'.

"Ike runs it up the middle and the guys pretend to tackle him," says Perry. "Everyone loves it and Ike gets to play."

On Friday night, Coach Perry pulled the 'Ike Special' out of the playbook. He told the opposing Lake Stevens High School Football players what was about to happen and he called number 57 out on to the field.

"I told them if he gets 10 or 20 yards, that's great," Perry says.

The play call was a surprise to almost everyone in the stands, including Ike's mom.

"I heard a lot of commotion and then I saw my son Ike run out onto the field," says Kay Ditzenberger. "My first thought was, 'I hope he doesn't drop it!,'" she laughs.

4th quarter. 10 seconds left. Quarterback Taran Lee hands the ball off to Ike.

"I dropped back to hand it off, and Ike ran backwards a little bit," says Lee.

Over the next 18 seconds, Ike ran a zig-zag pattern around the field, every step still inching closer to the goal line. Then he straightened out his run. The opposing players for Lake Stevens made admirable attempts to dive for Ike, but came up short, knowing Ike was going all the way. Then magic happened.

After a 51-yard run, Ike Ditzenberger crossed the goal line for a touchdown.

"I was bawling and everyone was screaming. It was such a special gift," says Ike's mom.

After a short celebration with his teammates in the end zone, Ike ripped off his helmet and ran toward the sideline with a grin from ear to ear. Thanks to both teams, Ike got his moment.

"To see the players and fans react the way they did was special," says Coach Perry. "They went nuts. I'm glad it could happen."

Snohomish High School lost 35-6, but the score didn't matter. Already Ike is thinking about the future.

"He wants to play for the Huskies," says mom. "But first, he says he wants a date for homecoming."

To Holykow Everyone's a critic...Think about it, Is Snohomish the only school to have students with special needs? NO...but they do remember that there should be a place for students with special needs on the "sacred" football lineup. Ike and his parents moved here from Woodinville because Ike wanted to play ball just like his big brother, but Woodinville just couldn't make room for him. Snohomish did because Coach Perry and our community cares and realizes that there is so much more to this sport than 6' and full of muscle. It's about being an inspiration and giving your best everyday and looking beyond a person's outward appearance and into their hearts. Everyone from that game walked away with an education from Ike and we are the better for it. Thank you to everyone who stayed in the stands and stood up and cheered for Ike it reminded me why I stayed here to raise my family and why I couldn't think of raising my children anywhere else.

Yes, it's a very heartwarming story, but with the Panthers losing 35-0 with ten seconds left, they made no sacrifice to make Ike's dream happen... that was provided by the Lake Stevens' Viking players and coaches!! They are the ones who gave Ike the opportunity to score, not one, but twice!! Last year, the Viking JV team gave him the same reception. The Vikings exemplify the true generosity of spirt and sportsmanship. This story should give more credit to them.

Everybody feel good now? Truth is the young man ran out of bounds after a 1yard gain. THEN was coaxed toward the endzone for a ceremonial "touchdown" that did not count. Still, good for him and the coaches and players to include a young person to experience a thrill like that.

taplibrary22>>>>>>I agree with you on how they labeled the story. The reporter might be the same one that did the other story of the military woman who gets her job back. They labeled that story "Lesbian seeks reinstatement to Air Force in trial that starts Monday". What a bunch of "name callers". How lame! It's like the reporter is a new reporter and trying to get a subject line that will get attention.

This is a great story but a TERRIBLE headline...you don't say "Diabetic Reporter" so why put a label first on the young man. He is an individual, a football player, a son, a student, etc. who happens to have Down Syndrome. He is an individual first and not the sum of his challenging condition.

It's nice to see a little GOOD News in the news these days! What an incredible thing for these teams and coaches to have done. Each and every one of the people involved will remember this moment their entire lives. This is what school sports is supposed to be about. Way to go, Coach Perry and Snohomish FB Players!

As a rule, I've been pretty cynical about local news. Truth be told, it's tough to get me to watch any local broadcast seeing as how the majority of the time is spent covering depressing, semisenational stories that offer little to no opportunity for viewer efficacy. However, a story like this reminds me of everything local news should be. Much kudos to King5 for picking up this story and giving it prominence on the website and the TV lineup.
