3A Boys State Hoops: Lakes 79, Franklin 66

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- Senior guard Andre Winston Jr. scored 29 points and Lakes shot a sizzling 55 percent from the field to beat defending champ Franklin 79-66 Wednesday in a first-round game at the Class 3A boys basketball tournament.

Winston Jr., who will play at James Madison next year, was 12 of 19 from the field also grabbed four rebounds and had three assists. The Lancers (21-4) led most of the way and by as many as 21 points thanks to 26 of 47 shooting from the field. They also went to the free-throw line 40 times, making 27. Isaac Winston scored 15 for Lakes to go with a game-high nine rebounds.

The Quakers (15-13) won the 3A title last year but start just one senior. Franklin shot a respectable 44 percent from the field (24 of 54) but were just 15 of 28 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 20 times. Anrio Adams led Franklin with 23 points. Juwuan Buchannan scored 18 and Arell Hennings 11.
