Last year: Australia's Peter Senior won at The Lakes to become the oldest winner in event history at 53. He closed with an even-par 72 in gale-force wind for a one-stroke victory.

Last week: Jason Day won the World Cup at Royal Melbourne and teamed with Adam Scott to give Australia the team title. Day won less than two weeks after eight relatives, including his grandmother, were killed in Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. ... Australia's Aron Price won the New South Wales Open at Castle Hill.

Notes: Scott, Day, Senior, Geoff Ogilvy and Aaron Baddeley top the Australian contingent. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and American Kevin Streelman also are in the field. ... Scott was third in the World Cup after sweeping the Australian PGA and Masters the previous two weeks. He won the 2009 tournament at New South Wales. ... Baddeley won as an amateur in 1999 at Royal Sydney and 2000 as a pro at Kingston Heath. ... Gary Player won the national championship a record seven times, one more than Jack Nicklaus.
