SEATTLE – Jim Mora is out as Seahawks head coach, and a league official told The Associated Press on Saturday the team is in "discussions" with Pete Carroll, but do not plan on giving him the dual title of president.

The official added the Seahawks will hire a general manager and separately a coach. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the Seahawks are not commenting.

The Seahawks stunned the NFL and fans Friday by the sudden announcement that Mora had been fired after posting a 5-11 record in his one and only season at the helm.

The Los Angeles Times reported Friday night that Carroll and the Seahawks are close to a five-year, $35 million deal to make him the president and head coach. It would be a lucrative deal for a man who posted a modest 33-31 record in four years as an NFL head coach.

"We've made a tough decision today," said CEO Tod Leiweke about Mora's firing. "It became apparent after conducting an extensive internal audit, that a new direction was needed to provide an opportunity for the organization to be successful. Today's decision, while difficult, is part of the process in building a franchise with a new vision in 2010."

Mora will reportedly receive about $12 million for the remaining three years on his contract.

"This team, more importantly this community, means so much to me that it hurts not being able to see this through," said Mora in a press release from the Seahawks. "I am disappointed I did not get the chance to complete my contract. This is a tough business that sometimes demands immediate gratification."

"I was very shocked," said Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh."I think Coach Mora is a hell of a coach."

Seahawks defensive end Darryl Tapp posted on his Twitter page "Coach Mora will be missed."

KING 5's Chris Egan reports a group from the Seahawks, including Leiweke, met with Carroll in Los Angeles earlier this week to see if he was interested in the job.

"My league sources tell me it would almost be a surprise now if it doesn't happen," said ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

"Pete's name comes out at this time every year. In the past, he hasn't commented on such reports," USC spokesman Tim Tessalone said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "He was not expected in (Friday). ... At this point, we have nothing to report."

A Seahawks spokesman inside the team's headquarters Friday afternoon refused to comment on Carroll. Carroll did not immediately return a phone call left for him by The AP. Leiweke did not return an e-mail from The AP asking about Carroll.

The Seahawks have also reportedly asked the Minnesota Vikings for permission to interview defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. ESPN.com's John Clayton tells KING 5 News that it's unlikely former Super Bowl winning coaches Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy or Jon Gruden would take the job.

Mora was named Holmgren's successor before the 2008 season, Holmgren's final year with the team. The Seahawks had negotiated with Holmgren to return as General Manager after the mid-season resignation of Tim Ruskell, but Holmgren decided to take a similar job with the Cleveland Browns.

The firing is a stunning reversal from last month when Leiweke gave Mora a vote of confidence. Mora himself said this week that he expected to return in 2010, despite Seattle losing its final four games.

Before coming to Seattle, Mora spent three seasons as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He posted a combined 27-23 record and led the Falcons to the NFC Championship Game after the 2004 season, followed by records of 8-8 and 7-9.

Mora, 48, moved the the Puget Sound area with his family when he was 13. He played for the University of Washington as a defensive back.

Are you (chevelle70ss and fusion) serious? You don't think Mora wasn't part of the problem? What Seahawks games were you watching? Mora lost the confidence of his players and would never take responsibility for anything. I'm sorry, but as the coach, you have to take some of the blame. Mora was either in denial or he really could not see the problem when he looked in the mirror. Either way, he just didn't get it. I thought it was a mistake to hire him in the first place, so I am very happy that he is gone!!!!

The fact is we don’t know the real reason why Mora is gone. My opinion is that the defensive and offensive staff needed to be revamped. That O-line needs some work. The problem isn’t Hasselbeck. You can’t pass the ball without protection and you need a running game to balance it up. I don’t think the team melded this season and that is where the coaches come in. Coaches need to bring a team together. They need to look at the team and find what works best, that did not happen. We don’t know what happens behind the scene. Most of the games they won this year was only by luck, not game plan or execution. The talent comes from the players but the game plan and execution comes from the coaches. I say most of the offensive problems had to do with the line and the fact that the players were not on the same page with each other. And the defense got worse as the season went on.

I am kind of shocked about this but if you fire Mora then fire the rest of the coaching staff as well. They were just as much at fault as Mora was. We have an offensive coordinator from Oakland right now calling plays, see where we were headed?!?!? Bring in Cowher or Dungy to straighten this team out. Holgream should have come back cause we probably would have given him the keys.

Good! Glad to see it. The Hawks' front office did the right thing. Jim Mora was the most disrespectful Coach I have ever seen. Players simply cannot respond to his kind of incessant negativism. Did you people not notice the tension on the sidelines the man caused - LAST YEAR? I certainly did. Not that I am advocating for Mike Holmgren, but Jim Mora is the reason Mike is not the GM in Seattle. As long as Mora was here, Mike would not be - that was pretty doggone obvious to me (just looking at how they reacted to one another on the sidelines... I believe I mentioned that). Anyway... this restores my faith in humanity... that it is not always the overbearing, repressive, oppressive, intrucive narcisist that is given the best opportunities for success. Too often that seems to be the case. (Or don't any of you have bosses where you work?)

Best thing to happen to the Hawks this year. I watched quite a few of his interviews with NWCN and just to listen to the idot talk is something else. He's more apt to doing the caveman commercials for Gieco. Only sad part about this deal is that he couldn't take the other looser with him, hasselbeck.

DUMB MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on the Seahawks, they should have given Mora a minimum of one more year. We were plagued with numerous injuries again all year. Now this really makes me feel like what the staff is really thinking. Everyone knows that it's the players that determine the outcome, not the coaches or internal staff, their not the ones physically playing the game. I think that we need to re-evaluate some of the players, A coach can only do so much, the rest is up to the players. HEY SEAHAWK STAFF, IT'S THE PLAYERS!!!!!

The problem with Mora is that he didn't "clean house" when he came in and make this team his own. He inherited - then accepted - the status quo personnel who were passed down from Holmgren. If he would have made his "we need a new attitude" speech and culled the dead wood when he walked in the door maybe they would have given him a few years to bring his "new team" around. Sorry Jim. I liked the more professional change in coaching style (veruses the chubby red-faced guy), but it's just a bit late to suddenly realize you need to start over - you have been with the organization before you got promoted.

To bad Tod Leiweke wasn't fired too. I guarantee you if that guy was outsted at the same time as Ruskell we'd have Holmgren or someone equally as capable calling the shots and might stand a chance in the next 2 seasons to be something other than a bad joke to the league. Idiots like Leiweke and pre-madonna's like Paul Allen are why we can't find a superbowl experienced coach. They were the "deciders" who took this team and ran it in to the ground. To bad for Mora too. I didn't think the guy stood a snowballs chance getting this team anywhere but I do feel for the guy taking on a no-win job and having to deal with that harsh reality. Truth is this team will not be news worthy (let alone season ticket price worthy) for at least 4 more seasons... and if Tod Leiweke is kept any longer than today start tagging more years on to that. I guess just like the Mariners owners, Paul Allen is more interested in providing a mediocre experience than a winning pro-football franchise legacy.

You really can not make any legitimate improvements in one year, especially with all of the injuries we had with KEY Players, Jim Mora should have been given one more year with a heathly team. This descion was completely unfair to Jim Mora and Tod Leiweke Paul Allen should know this. I think Paul Allen really needs to re-evaluate Mr. Leiweke's roll in all this too, why not FIRE EVERYONE and start from scratch. The Firing of Jim Mora this year was WRONG and Totally unfair.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the removal of Matt Hasslebeck, I like him and I think has done a fantastic job with our team over the years, he is one of my most favorite players, but with the injuries he has had in the last 3 seasons leads me to believe that his time with the Seahawks is up, we really can not afford to put another bandaid on him and send him out to the field and hope for the best. We really need to look at a strong fresh healthy QB. All Good Things must come to an end.

Fact is you can blame the o-line or Hasselbeck, but the fact is he didn't speak to the players we have. We aren't going to get a whole new team over the off season so things wouldn't have changed next season. Get Carroll lets win some games he can't get in trouble for what he did at USC cause those rules don't apply in the NFL!!

Pete Carroll... come on Seattle... lets try someone new and that has had some success in the NFL... this isn't the NCAA and I know I'm not the only one who thinks Carroll and Zorn are bad ideas unless you want more seasons like this one. If this team is going to ever reach what Paul Allan promised us when that stadium was shoved down our throats it's going to require coaches and players with experience and good records. Who else wishes we weren't paying for a losing team to play in our expensive stadium?!? Now if only we had been smart enough to tell Paul that there was a trigger mechanism in the deal and if he couldn't produce a team that didn't make you want to tear your own eyes out of your skull he had to pay for that stadium!

Well it sounds like the Pete Carroll deal is nearly done. This deal will not turn out well for Seahawks fans. We fired a bad coach and are replacing him with another equally bad coach. Sure Carroll does great as a college level coach but his past in the NFL shows he can't make the cut and never has been able to. The only thing fans can do now is wait another year for this to start all over again because Pete Carroll is not the answer to the Seahawks problem and will only continue the terrible decision making that Leiweke, Ruskell and Mora started. Until Tod Leiweke is thrown out of this organization you will continue to see no-brain decisions like this one that do not help this team. I'm so glad I turned down season tickets for this next season... it's gonna be a lot longer than 4 years before this team is even worth mentioning. Thanks Paul Allen for telling us you'd keep a good team here if we built a new stadium and screwing us on the deal.

They are firing Mora for Pete Carroll. Mora has only coached one season, that is not nearly enough time to see what he can do for the team. Besides he wasn't the problem. You have players that can throw a football i.e. Hasselbeck and you have players that can't catch i.e. Houshmandzadeh. So that brings up the next problem. Why Pete Carroll? His team was ranked 25th this year. Your just adding to the problem if you hire him.

Pete Carrol's success at USC can be attributed to many of his former assistant coaches over the years who have left his program to head up their own programs at other schools. For example Mike Riley at Oregon State University. Mike made a mistake leaving OSU the first time to coach the Chargers. He came back and is within reach of establishing himself as the winningest coach in OSU history. Pete Carrol Should learn from Mike stay put at USC. We do not need him in Seattle. We do not have the light and glitter in the Northwest ,that he is used to getting in L.A. We'll be sorry. Paul Allyn shouldn't "Coug It". OMG did I say that out loud. Sorry fellow Cougs!

All of us that played football at any level know one thing for sure. The coach can't make the plays for you. His place is on the sideline. The complete team makes the plays that determine the outcome of a successful team. Head Office to Waterperson and everthing in between.

Wow! A Shocker but I'm glad Mora's gone. When your the Coach of an NFL Team your supposed to be the leader andd provide leadership and also take the esponsibility when your team loses/ not performing. Listening to Mora speak his press conference and his Sunday Nite show it was pretty evident that there was a complete lack of it. Mora consistently answered around the questions of what was going on with the Seahawks instead of being direct. Sometimes listening to him I even wondered if Mora was even on the same planet on the day the games were played. Continuing to point the finger at yourself and giving the "Pop Warner, Golly , Gee Whiz the guys are great....Blah, Blah, Blah" and not fixing the Offensive line problems/ protecting the QB does not win football games. Lets hope that the next coach and GM will have the b.... to fix the problems, hire young talent, and make/take the Seahawks back to where Mike Holmgren had it.

dennisteen Really you wouldn't care to put a couple of donuts on that? As bad as the Seadorks did Carroll does not have an out standing NFL record. If he did he'd still be there. Tony Dungee has an outstanding record and he available he's respected by the players something Nomora can't understand. But you know 35 million for a GM and head coach is cheap. Paul is cheaping out on us and when this doesn't work you'll likely be seeing the Seahawks becoming something like the Okie Prairiechickens.

The Seahawks will be lucky to win 1 game next season with Pete Carroll as team President and Head Coach. If it wasn't for the USC alumni deep pocket books and the rich USC football history Carroll would not have had the success at USC that he did. The reason Carroll is leaving USC is because the Pac-10 has gotten so competitive Pete knows he will no longer have the success at USC that he once had. Jim Mora is a class act and a character guy and the Seahawks should be embarassed to give a guy like him his walking papers! Paul Allen is giving Al Davis a run for his money for being recognized as the worst NFL franchise owner in the league!

Firing Mora shows how little the managment of the Seahawks are out of touch with reality. You can't win games with all the injuries to key players on top of key players having bad years and with no O-line. It is not Mora's fault they sucked. I think it was a move made strickly to get Carroll to say yes to coming here... I sure hope they prove me wrong but I doubt Carroll will make it any better... does anyone remember that Holmgren was the GM for the first year or so before the Hawks got good and he couldn't handle the double duty? Carroll will not be any better and most likely worse.

Seattle professional sports do not make decisions to win. It is always the bottom line. When these teams lose things happen. Consider the sonics. Now it seems to be costing the taxpayers even after they have left. Pro basketball is a joke. IT is all about entertainment. The latest incidents show that it seems to be a hood game not something to be interested in. I am glad they are gone. Consider the Mariners. As long as you go to a game and use the advertisers products they will always be mediocre. It is not about winning. Look at the very good young players that have at one time been on the mariner roster. Varitek, Lowe, Compare that to who they traded them for. They evaluated great propect and talent and then traded before they got to stardom and they would cost the mariners some money. But what they got in return was expensive trash. In the long run it was expensive very expensive. The team would be better to rely on our scouts and farm system and then appreciate the

what that farm system has done. Now as to the Seahawks .. How this is a little different is that we have 2 quarterbacks of some quality. HBack is past his prime. Give him some time and a miracle healing potion and it would probably be alright if we had a defensive line to protect him I don't see any of this as reality. You have the opther guy who flashes brilliance at times. But he lacks courage or his coaches calls have no courage. I would tend to think they have no confidence in him. The you have an overpriced receiver, housh something, who wants every pass thrown to him. But then he drops the important ones. In other words Mora should have at least one more year to show improvement. Thsis early firing shows nothing has changed and now a new guy who was a great college coach and an average coach in the pros. There is a lot of difference between impressionable kids and spoiled kids. You can't tell these spoiled kids anything. Until Seattle pro sports get some guts instead

How many of you would still have a job after one year if you sucked at it as bad as Mora did at his????? Smarten up guys, it was a well deserved and justified firing. They just haven't finish the job yet. They stil have one more to go..............Hasselbeck.............

To all you Matt Hasselback detractors, I say you are nuts or know nothing about football . Superman couldnt function behind the offensive line the Hawks fielded this year. Evidence the lack of a running game. Mora is responsible for at least two things: 1) instituting a passing game his QB and receivers were clearly uncomfortable / unclear with and 2) starting / playing Julius over Justin.

The reason Pete Carroll is leaving USC can be summed up in two words, "Reggie Bush". The NCAA has been investigating USC and Bush for several years now and it is time for the hammer to drop. We should soon see the penalty's come down and it won't be pretty for USC. Bowl bans and scholarship loss will gut the program just as it did as Univ of Wa. Carroll knows this and is getting while the getting is good. I wish him luck at Seattle and I am sure he had nothing to do with the perks that Bush was taking but the punishment will be severe. And, oh by the way, the pay at Seattle won't be chump change.

I am not sure if firing Mora is the answer. Mora should have elimnated all of Mikes mistakes, like Hasselbek and the rest of his flock last fall and maybe he would of had a good team. I just hope the new Coach (Carroll?) sees Mora's mistakes and builds a real team of football players that respect their own abilities and play footabll and don't make excuses!

My hopes and expectations have always been high for the Seahawks. During the exhibition games of the 1976 season, I remember our seine boat crew running to the SE Alaska fishing grounds with the entire crew huddled around the radio on deck. A bit later, the days of Chuck Know were so exciting. My enthusiasm has never wavered until this season, except maybe some of the Ken Bering years. Who knows what moves will produce results? For now, I am reinvesting my hopes and need for football with Steve Sarkisian and the Huskies. They couldn't have done better in their choice of coaches. In the meantime, I can only hope that the Hawks will get on the right track. Good luck, and Go Seahawks!!

williamtomanys got the ticket. Bring back Jim Zorn. You don't fire a coach after just one season, and you don't hire a coach who went back to the pac 10 because he had a lousy record in the pros. Carroll's record with NFL team is something like 33-31. Doesn't that tell the Hawks front office something? Jim Mora deserved at least another. And, the players had just a little bit to do with the whole thing too. Makes one wonder if allot of the Seahawks problems all these years don't begin somewhere higher up. Hey, it's a thought. Soo, Exactly WHY did we not get Mike Holgren back. This whole thing is sounding kinda suspiciuos and political.

They're the Seachokes, steeped in mediocrity since their inception in the late '70's. This will be be yet another chapter, but the story will remain the same. No big surprise. Holmgren was that franchises best hope and chance when he was there. Too bad the zebras stole their shot at a championship. The 'Bus' retiring after the Super Bowl in Detroit, (Bettis' home town), was too great an NFL story to have the Stealers, (not a typo), not win. Seattle may do something great, someday. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The Seattle Seahawks and its' owner, Mr. Allen, will shortly become the source of late night "entertainment" and jokesters of all types. The franchise, at this point, is dead, and will be dead for the next 4 years. Go to their games for the beer and food, and don't expect squat from the "game" on the field. Ain't gonna happen. Jim Zorn......no....maybe as a QB coach.....head coach....no way...if you are trying to purge Holmgren then they need a new direction....Carroll is not the answer, nor is Zorn....they need a defensive minded head coach...this division is not good.....Cards will come back, Leinart will be QB there soon, Rams(suck)...49ers are average at best....the Hawks need an O-line....you win with strong line play....no matter how you slice it Hawks are rebuilding....Zorn/Carroll are not the right fit here....with 2 1st round picks, they need beef not a QB or WR...look at the Jets....not sexy....but they are where the Hawks want to be....and they should use that way to build their team now....strong D, great O-line play....if anything they need to say later to Jones and get a RB....I would like to see the Vikings D coordinator here....he makes more sense than Zorn/Carrol.
