BERKELEY, Calif. – A three-run first inning lifted No. 1 Cal over the 16 seed Washington in game one of the Berkeley Super Regional Saturday night, 5-0.
Cal improves to 55-5 on the year while UW is 39-18. The two meet Sunday at 4 p.m. on ESPN2. The UW needs to win the game to force a second game that would be played at approximately 6:30 p.m. and keep its season going. The winner of this Super Regional advances to the WCWS.
Washington sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) pitched the complete game, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits with four strikeouts. The No. 1 Golden Bears put up three on the Husky pitcher in the first inning with a two-run home run from Valerie Arioto and a solo shot to center by Jace Williams.
The UW had its opportunities in the game, twice getting the bases loaded. The Huskies had our hits, one each by Inglesby, Kimi Pohlman, Shawna Wright and Hooch Fagaly.
Center fielder Jerrin Fa’asua (Oceanside, Calif.) made a great catch for the first out of the second, She caught the ball at the top of the ball to rob a home run from Danielle Henderson.
Several more great defensive plays were on display for the Huskies by Fagaly, Wright, Courtney Gano, Kimberlee Souza and Kylee Lahners.
Cal tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a fielder’s choice and a groundout.
Jolene Henderson pitched the complete game for Cal, allowing just four this with 11 strikeouts in seven innings.
