SEATTLE - On a day when Husky fans celebrate the return of Jake Locker, KING 5 News has learned that the UW football program has recently self-reported a violation where more than $300 worth of alcohol was purchased for underage recruits on a recruiting visit.

Coach Sarkisian said players took recruits out and the recruits didn't have enough money, so the Husky players paid for the tabs.

Each one of the current players signed a waiver before taking the recruits out. The waiver outlines what is legal and what is not legal.

The UW handed out punishments internally. Husky players involved performed community service while the recruits repaid the money they borrowed.

While it's a violation, it's not considered a major violation.

It happened on Sarkisian's first  full recruiting weekend as a head coach.

The Seattle Times (reporter Bob Condotta) has provided some additional information on the original King5 story regarding the secondary violations. "The original KING-5 story says the violation was for purchasing alcohol for underage recruits. In fact, a UW spokesman says the self-report filed by the school on the incident does not mention that alcohol was purchased. Instead, the report says the incident occurred at a nightclub --- not necessarily a 21-and-over only place --- but does not specify that the tab was for alcohol. So alcohol was not necessarily involved and sounds as if the players were not necessarily at an establishment where they were not legally allowed to be." "According to a UW spokesman, it happened on what was the first full recruiting weekend for the Huskies last year, so the weekend of Jan. 16-18, not Steve Sarkisian's first weekend as coach, as the KING-5 story said." More available at the Times' web site.

Did you folks at KING 5 have to "temper" Locker's announcement by news a secondary level infractions that are a year old? Please read the Seattle Times and make proper corrections and an formal apology.

I'm betting KING 5 had all the facts, but then it wouldn't be a "top" story. What fun are facts? Just pathetic. Who holds these reporters accountable? This story is still #1 in the sports section of this website as well. Unfortunately this is the kind of nonsense that the producers are after. No longer is integrity and honesty a value in local TV journalism, just this type of sensational b.s.

King TV...Yellow Journalism at it's best !!! Chris Egan was the author of this stale news release. The violation was reported and released to the NCAA and Pac 10 in January 2009. No alcohol involved. You got to be fricking kidding me. Don James was right, about the Seattle Media being against the University of Washington athletic department. I guess news ratings are hurting at King TV. I hope you guys broke. Oh yah...the National Enquirer is looking for crack reporters like Chris Egan. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/h ... index.html

What a joke, must be a bunch of COUGS working at King5 The players took the recruits out to dinner and to an under age night club... I can't beleive with the first flite of the 787 and all the news about the Mariners this is the type of BS you have to lead off the news with...

This story was overhyped, late and not completely accurate. It was a $300 tab that may have included alcohol, not $300 worth of booze. And there is no proof that underaged people drank. The violation was for spending too much, not for providing underaged minors with alcohol. I would expect KING to be better than this poor example of reporting. My respect for Mr. Egan, KING-TV and the editor who allowed this without fully having the facts has dropped considerably.

Great example of why I just can't watch KING 5. The producers must be so proud of this as a lead story. Local news is just simply so bad. Why not lead with the good news for once, then a mention of this. Seattle Times at least put it on page 2. No class KING 5, simply no class.

Hey King5 - First, aren't you a sponsor of the Huskies? If so, why does it seem you are so quick to dig up dirt and highlight it as "important" in order to trash the Huskies? Wouldn't a lead story be something more along the lines of Jake Locker returning to UW or Cliff Lee coming to the M's? Second, how is this even news? Would you also like to report that Barak Obama was sworn is as president? It seems that would also be news under your terrible reporting strategy since it happened about the same time as this incident. Third, maybe you should actually check some facts before reporting such a ridiculous story. For all of you who are interested in the real details, please go to Bob Condotta's blog (link below) to see what real journalism looks like. Lastly, I know I won't be relying on King5 for ANY news in the future and I hope the rest of your followers realize what a horrendous job your are doing as well!!! http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskyfootballblog/index

OMG: ok, pull the purple thong out a bit, as its apparently cutting off circulation to your brain. Don't blame the media (I know, they are all plotting against us dawgs), as it was our own athletic dept who 'self reported'..... Do you really expect the media, local or national, to simply ignore it? Hey, is that the weezle logo? I thought it was retired, back to the malamute, cuz nobody could find a true husky.

UW self reported. This is a year old. Level 2 recruiting violation. This happens every 1.2 minutes in Pullman (minors buying alcohol) What the kids did was bad. Is this really a lead story?

Hey dumbcoog , You are right "it is a good THINK" that this kind of reporting is done, however the critical tone to all of the underage dirinking is a riot. Wassu campus floats on alcohol. Just that the frat houses and recruiting endeavors have never been commented on by anyone in public media. You are right in that it is a great way to bring down the Husky football program ,seeing that you guys have not figured out to do it on the field. Hope that you have a good a season next year and remember...........no drinking over there. Heinous activity, look it up in the dictionary and it will say WSU.

I do not understand how some of these comments just sweep this under the rug. These kids are old enough to know that being under age and buying alcohol for underage kids is wrong....dead wrong. What if....just what if one of those players got in a car accident while under the influence...would it be news then??? Each player signed a waiver. did they not read or understand this waiver?? This is not a small story. Is this a common practice at UW football land??

Yes, that shouldn't have been done. Yes, it was self-reported by UW. Yes, KING 5 reported on it. Can we just move on now -- tell us about the weather for the next week? Thanks.

While I agree the NCAA can get a little nitpicky with what is and isn't a "violation", the important fact here is that it was discovered and self reported to the NCAA. It seems schools must follow lots of rules to be able to make millions on the backs of these athletes? Something wrong with this picture when a student athlete can't even use a coach's phone to call his mom, yet they can risk their livelyhoods for the rest of their lives to fill stadiums with paying customers?

Crack reporting right there... Next up...you won't GUESS who the next President of the United States is!!

Figure the high school kids told the players, "Gee wiz kind sirs, we forgot to bring money to buy our dinner here at the expensive steak place." The players then just tell the waitstaff to put it on my tab and cover it themselves and tell the kids to forget about it. Could have been that the players drank the booze and the underage ones did not? Maybe. Oh well, we got Locker back and wouldn't he look good in Seahawk blue?

This story just edged out KING 5's second choice story "Man stands in rain, gets wet". Sounds to me like the Edward R. Murrow School of Communications is once again agenda-setting. Whatever happened to journalistic integrity?

Buying alcohol for underage kids, against the law. Underage kids consuming and paying for alcohol also against the law. There seems to be more to this story than UW has recently let out.
