The Seattle Thunderbirds edged the Everett Silvertips 2-1 in Game One of the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs in front of a mixed crowd at ShoWare Center in Kent Saturday night. This is the first time the two teams have faced each other in playoff action since Everett joined the WHL as an expansion team in 2003.

The T-Birds scored twice in the first period (both during power plays); forward Russell Maxwell put Seattle on the board in the opening minutes of the game, while the WHL's top-scoring defenseman, Shea Theodore, notched his 23rd goal of the season later in the first to put Seattle up 2-0. The Silvertips cut the lead to 2-1 early in the second period, when Patrick Pajkob scored on a power play, however, despite outshooting the T-Birds by a whopping 19-4 in the second, and 39-22 overall, Everett could not get another puck past Seattle goaltender Mumaugh.

This was an incredibly physical game, peppered with penalties (20 minutes total), as each team fought, almost desperately at times, to control the ice. Fans attending Game Two today at Comcast Arena in Everett should expect to witness the same type of intensity as both teams battle to move past the first round of the playffs for the first time in a number of seasons. Today's game begins at 4:05pm and tickets are still available.

NOTE: The Thunderbirds Community Sports Foundation is pleased to announce it raised $3,391.50 during its "50/50" raffle promotion last night, to benefit the Tim Bozon Fund (Tim is a member of the Kootenay Ice WHL team who has been hospitalized since early March, battling a serious form of bacterial meningitis. Donations to the fund will go toward paying for his care.)
